Houston Astros righthander Rodger Clemens has been dominate all season long. For five innings on Thursday he was dominating the Brewers too. But in the span of seven hitters in the 7th inning, the Brewers did what no team has been able to do since early July ... hand Clemens a loss.
With the exception of a solo homerun in the 6th inning by Rickie Weeks, Clemens was in cruise control Thursday in Minute Maid Park. Then the wheels fell off.
Lyle Overbay opened the Brewers big inning with a double. After Carlos Lee followed with a walk, it looked like Clemens might get out of the jam when he got Geoff Jenkins to fly out to shallow center (on a 3-0 count no less!). But Bill Hall ripped a single that scored Overbay to tie the game at 2-2. Russell Branyon walked to load the bases, and then Damian Miller broke the game open with a two-run double to right.
Prince Fielder ended the inning with a sacrifice fly, but the damage was done as the Brewers took a 5-2 lead.
Rick Helling pitched a hitless 7th and 8th inning and Derrick Turnbow notched the save with a solid 9th inning. Starter Tomo Ohka pitched six good innings to get the win (his 8th), including a crucial 4th inning when he got out of a bases loaded jam by inducing a 1-2-3 double play.
The two teams go at it again on Friday when Doug Davis (9-8, 4.20) faces off against Houston RHP Ezequiel Astacio (2-6, 6.66).
