Brewers Rise to Occassion

Capuano gets 18th Win

Nate Roth

All season long, the Milwaukee Brewers offense has been hit or miss, feast or famine, Jeckyl and Hyde.  One day removed from being shut out, the Brewers stormed back from a four run deficit against the St. Louis Cardinals and their Cy Young candidate pitcher to win 9-6.

Bill Hall collected four hits and Lyle Overbay three to lead the Brewers offense on their four run and three run outbursts in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively.  Uncharacteristically wild, but getting the win nonetheless, was Chris Capuano.  It was his 18th win this season, the most wins by a Brewers starter since Teddy Higuera in 1987 (he also had 18).  Derrick Turnbow pitched the ninth for his 34th save of the season.

Saddled with the loss was Chris Carpenter, now 21-5 on the season.  He gave up all nine runs, easily his worst outing of the season.

Things did not look good for the Brew Crew early on as the walks and pitch count of Capuano mounted.  He walked eight in six innings of work, walking three straight (one intentional) in the third inning plating a run, and setting up the Cardinals' four run fifth inning with a key walk to Reggie Sanders.

The Brewers scoring got started with a two out rally in the fourth inning with Capuano delivering a two run single.  Onto the fifth and the Brewers down by four, J.J. Hardy and Overbay got on base for Carlos Lee, who hit a sacrifice fly to score Hardy.  Geoff Jenkins then doubled in Overbay, with Hall then tripling in Jenkins.  Rickie Weeks then grounded out for the second out of the inning, scoring Hall.

The Brewers took the lead the next inning on a two run double by Overbay, driving in Brady Clark and Hardy.  Two batters later, Overbay was driven in by Hall's third hit of the night.

The Brewers are now five wins away from reaching 81 and finishing .500 for the first time since 1992.  Since the Cubs won, the Brewers are still percentage points behind them for third place in the NL Central.  And for all you dreamers out there, the Brew Crew is 7 ½ games out of the Wild Card race, their magic number is two.
