St. Louis Wins 2-0 to Avoid Sweep

Dennis Jenders

Doug Davis pitched a very good good game but couldn't get the run support today as the Brewers were mastered again by Jeff Suppan. Not scoring one run the Brewers fell 2-0 to the Central champs.

All season long Davis has not received the same offensive support as Chris Capuano or Ben Sheets and it happened again Sunday as the offense was absent for the finale contest of the season against St. Louis. Suppan pitched eight shutout innings allowing only six hits and striking out seven before giving way to Jason Isringhausen who got his 37th save of the season as he slammed the door shut on the Brewers.

A day earlier the Brewers roughed up Mark Mulder and did the same against Chris Carpenter on Friday, but the offense couldn't support Davis who went eight innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven.

Davis sat down eight of the first nine batters before giving up a triple to Jim Edmonds in the fourth. Reggie Sanders would hit a sacrifice fly to plate him after Davis walked Albert Pujols. Edmonds would hit a homer in the sixth inning to score the second run of the game.

The Brewers made some noise in the fourth when J.J. Hardy singled to center and Overbay followed with a single as well. With one out Carlos Lee came to the plate but hit into a double play to end the inning. The Brewers just couldn't get it done and fell one game under the .500 mark.

With seven games left the Brewers need to win just four to avoid a losing season. With four games against Cincinnati this week the Crew will need to sweep them to let the fans see them lock down the .500 record on Thursday.
