Don't Break Out the Brooms

Maddux Dominates Brewers

Nate Roth

The series finale between the Cubs and Brewers was impressive. Perhaps taking a mental day off after two hard fought wins, the Milwaukee Brewers were no match for Greg Maddux and the Chicago Cubs Thursday afternoon, dropping to the southerly neighbors 3-0.

Maddox (13-13) was in control from the start with Brewers hitters aggressive early in the count, he cruised through the game with nary a hit or a walk. Keeping his pitch count low, the 39-year old right hander carved up the Milwaukee lineup. Ryan Dempster finished up the 9 th inning with his 29th save.

Rick Helling (2-1) pitched decently, but ran into trouble in the third when Michael Barrett doubled. After Maddux flied out, Neifi Perez doubled him home for the lead. In the fifth inning, Barrett again lead off the inning by reaching this time on a walk, once Maddux struck out, Perez then singled with Barrett reaching third base. With Todd Walker at the plate, Perez took off for second, but Helling's pitch got by catcher Damian Miller, allowing Barrett to score and Perez to advance to third. Walker's sacrifice fly made it 3-0, and that would be all the Cubs would need to win.

Maddox scattered four hits and allowed only one Brewer to reach second base. This was the fifth game in the last eight that the Brewers have been held to one run or fewer.

The Brewers now sport a 75-77 record and are in a virtual tie with the Cubs for third place in the National League Central. The Brewers won the season series 9-7 and a crowd of 31,137 took in the last matchup of the season between the two teams.
