Grand Slammin' Time

Jenkins' Powers Seven Run Second Inning

Dennis Jenders

It only took two innings for the Brewers to win tonight. Capped off with a Geoff Jenkins grand slam the Brewers sent 10 players to the plate and scored seven runs on five hits. The offensive out pour sent starter Brian Lawerence to the bench and put a win in the Brewers column.

A night after home runs cost the Brewers a close game the offense picked itself back up and gave Chris Capuano hit team leading 15th win. The second inning started when Russell Branyan singled to right. Damian Miller would follow with a single and Corey Hart would walk loading the bases for Rickie Weeks. Weeks would get an RBI single and the hot hitting J.J. Hardy would follow with a deep fly ball that almost left the park. Instead the sacrifice fly would plate another run. Lyle Overbay broke his slump and singled home another run. Carlos Lee was walked and thats when Jenkins did his damage. Lifting a pitch to deep right field he cleared the bases and capped off the seven run inning with a smile.

One of the hottest hitters in baseball since the break, Jenkins hit just his third grand slam of his career. His last came July 5, 2003, against the Rockies at Miller Park. Lee would add a two run shot in the fourth off Chris Oxspring. That shot would give Lee his third consecutive 30 homerun season and his second career 100 RBI season.

The Padres would finally strike in the seventh when Ben Johnson hit a solo shot. The team would add another run in the ninth and the Brewers also added one in the eighth.

In Capuano's first full season he has won 15 games, the last player to do that was Cal Eldred when he won 16 in 1993. Striking out six and walking only one Capuano performed well with the lead and allowed only one run on four hits before being lifted for Prince Fielder to pinch hit in the bottom of the seventh.

The Brewers will face Woody Williams (6-11, 5.01 ERA) tomorrow. Wes Obermueller (1-2, 4.62 ERA) will take Ben Sheets' spot in the rotation and will need a strong outing to effectively replace the staff ace.
