Brewers Fade in Loss

Padres take opener with 6-5 win

The Padres did what the Brewers have struggled to do in their homestand, climb above the .500 mark. With an 0-2 count in the eighth Khalil Greene hit a two-run shot off Kane Davis to give the Padres a 4-3 lead which would lead to a win Thursday night.

Ben Johnson would hit a homer in the ninth off Jose Capellan to plate two runs and increase the lead to 6-3 and at that point it looked like all hope was lost. But the Brewers heroics of the previous game almost struck again as J.J. Hardy hit a two-out, two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth off Trevor Hoffman to bring the game within one run.

But it wouldn't be enough as Rick Helling's six inning performance was wasted. Allowing only two runs over 6.1 innings the Brewers kept the game close with the West leading Padres. But as the Brewers are starting to fade down the stretch so is the bullpen. Capellan and Davis couldn't keep the game close enough for the offense. "I'm supposed to hold it there," Davis said. "I didn't do my job."

The Brewers will look to bounce back Friday when Chris Capuano faces righty Brian Lawerence.
