Prince Sinks Pirates

Rookies Powers Brewers to 6-5 Win

Dennis Jenders

Prince Fielder hit a two-run, pinch-hit homer off Jose Mesa in the ninth inning Wednesday to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. After losing the night before the Brewers pulled ahead early with a 4-0 lead before the Pirates came back in the sixth for a 5-4 lead. But Fielder wouldn't let the Brewers go quietly.

Rarely used since his call-up put an end to the three-game losing streak. Another rookie, Rickie Weeks, hit a two-run blast in the first to score J.J. Hardy after he singled to give the Brewers their first hit. Hardy would follow suit in the second when he hit a deep blast to center field scoring Brady Clark and giving the Brewers a quick lead.

But it was the Pirates who fought back in the sixth plating 3 runs to give them a 5-3 lead as they got to Tomo Ohka when Ty Wigginton hit a three-run shot off the righty to setup Mark Redman for the win.

Jose Mesa walked Lyle Overbay on four pitches and it looked like the Brewers might have something going in the ninth. That's when Yost made the call to the bench replacing Derrick Turnbow, who struck out the side in the top of the ninth, with Prince Fielder.

On an 0-1 pitch Fielder crushed the ball to deep right field. After his home run trot he was met at home by a jubilant team. "Hopefully we'll be able to do that for at least 10 more years," Fielder said after the trio of rookies provided all the pop at the plate. Even though the Brewers are starting to fade it's another reason to be hopeful about the future.
