Astros Get to Davis

Brewers Fall Apart in Loss

Lifting one Davis for another, Milwaukee Brewers Manager Ned Yost believed playing the percentages was the best for the situation.  Unfortunately, the good intentions fell by the wayside as the Brewers lost 5-3.

Doug Davis (9-9) stymied the Houston Astros through six and two thirds innings, surrendering only four hits and no runs while striking out eight.  Although he labored through the first few innings, thus running up his pitch count, he threw fairly flawless until giving up a two out single and walk in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Yost noticed Davis' pitch count approaching 120 and decided to bring in righty Kane Davis to finish out the inning.

His first batter Jose Vizcaino singled on a 2-1 pitch up the middle, driving in Chris Burke to tie the game.  Davis then threw a wild pitch allowing Brad Ausmus to score the go ahead run, and eventually walked Willie Tavarez.  The next batter Craig Biggio hit a very weak grounder that died about 75 feet up the first base line.  Davis tried to flip it to first baseman Lyle Overbay, but the ball hit Biggio and tailed into foul territory, allowing Vizcaino to score the third run of the inning.

In accordance with the Brewers bats struggling against rookie pitchers, they were thwarted all night by Ezequiel Astascio, who came into the game with a devilish 6.66 ERA.  The Brewers first run came from a Corey Hart doubled to left and being driven in by a single by Lyle Overbay.  Damian Miller added two more on a home run in the ninth, but the rally petered out after that when Brad Lidge came in for his 30th save.  Russ Spring (4-3), who pitched an inning of relief, got the win.

The loss drops the Brewers to 60-63 and dropped them into fourth place in the NL Central.
