Capuano Drives Home a Win

Brewers Take Series 2-1

Dennis Jenders

Lefty Chris Capuano didn't rely on the Brewers offense to give him a lead. Instead he gave the Brewers a 2-0 lead in the second that would eventually be enough to give the Brewers a win. Throwing seven shutout innings Capuano simply outdueled Jamey Wright as he allowed only six hits while striking out eight and walking none.

Carlos Lee doubled to lead off the second and Geoff Jenkins followed with a walk issued by the former Brewer Wright. Russell Branyan was next but he struck out swinging. The ball got away from catcher Todd Greene on the strikeout which allowed Lee and Jenkins to advance 90 feet. Rookie Corey Hart popped out to Greene and Chad Moeller was walked. With the bases loaded Capuano didn't rely on anyone else to give him some run support. With a level swing Capuano lined the ball into right field scoring Lee and Jenkins. Billy Hall ended the inning watching a called strike three.

Lee, Hart and Capuano were the only Brewers with hits in the game. Both pitchers dueled through the seventh dominating the bats that usually rule in Coors. But Capuano found himself with the better outcome as the former Brewer, Jamey Wright, was charged with the loss.

Capuano, now 13-8, leads the Brewers in wins and simply silenced the Rockies bats. Throwing 105 pitches, 70 of them were strikes. He exited in the eighth as Dana Eveland replaced him. After giving up two hits to Luis Gonzalez and Todd Helton manager Ned Yost had seen enough. The call went to rookie Jose Capellan and he made quick work of Matt Holliday getting him to ground out to short to end the inning. Closer Derrick Turnbow came on in the ninth to covert his 26th save on the season, throwing 95mph heat, and seal the Brewers victory.

The Brewers will travel to Houston to play the Astro in a four-game series. Houston lost to Chicago today putting the Phillies in a tie for the Wild Card lead. Going one and four against Houston this year Milwaukee will need to at least split the series to continue their quest towards a .500 record. But if the club can find a way to steal the series they could find themselves right back in the Wild Card race and could seriously challenge some teams down the stretch.
