Brewing a Win

Crew defeats Rocks 6-4

Dennis Jenders

Tempers flared, Yost was tossed, yet the Brewers kept it together to brew a win on the road against the Rockies. Victor Santos won his fourth game on the year and just his second in 14 games. But his success was planned.

Pitching in 24 games for Colorado in 2002 Santos had learned the key to winning in the hitter-friendly park - changing speeds. "I know exactly how to be successful in this park" Santos said. And he proved it by throwing only one curveball and going 5.2 innings before Rick Helling came on for him.

Santos only allowed six hits and three runs walking no one until the fifth and struck out four. Throwing 57 of his 92 pitches for strikes Santos challenged the Rockies batters and won.

Jeff Francis wasn't quite as lucky as Wes Helms and Rickie Weeks hit solo shots. The big inning came in the fourth when Geoff Jenkins doubled to left field and Carlos Lee scored from first. He was given the stop sign at third but rolled around the bag and beat the throw by a toe as he slide feet first into home. Jenkins followed as he scored on a single by Bill Hall and Helms hit the homer giving the Brewers a 4-1 lead.

Colorado would add a run in the bottom of the fourth and would get another in the sixth to match Helm's RBI single. But after Weeks gave the Crew some insurance in the seventh with his homer the game looked in the bag as Derrick Turnbow came on in the ninth after Kane Davis held the Rocks in the eighth.

Turnbow allowed a run on two hits but was able to convert his 25th save by striking out Matt Holliday and getting Garrett Atkins to ground out to end the game.

Manager Ned Yost was ejected in the fifth for arguing with home plate umpire Bill Miller. Bill Hall checked his swing and Miller called a strike on him without asking for any help. The quiet stadium gave everyone a chance to hear what was going on. It was unclear if Yost or another member of the staff made a comment in the dugout but Miller responded towards the dugout and Yost angrily responded that he should stay out of his dugout. As Miller responded back Yost came out fired up and dug into the umpire before watching the rest of the game on TV.
