Skid Continues for Crew

Sheets Pounded in 11-2 Loss

Dennis Jenders

Coors Field is normally known as a hitters haven because the thin air of Denver allows for more home runs. But tonight the Rockies found base hits were just as effective as Brewers ace Ben Sheets was tagged for five runs in the sixth, leading to an 11-2 pounding.

The power of Coors was also seen in the fourth when Sheets singled, his first of the year. The Brewers looked to be in trouble early as Bill Hall didn't score in the first with his indecision and indiscretion on the base paths. Lyle Overbay doubled to deep right which should have scored a run but Hall was caught watching the outfielder instead or hustling around third. A passed ball on Geoff Jenkins could have also scored Hall but he was standing on third instead of taking a normal lead off the bag.

The Brewers struck first in the fourth when Damian Miller drove one to the wall to score recent addition Corey Hart but Todd Helton came back with a two-run blast and the Rockies finished the inning with another run to lead the game 3-1.

Sheets looked great early striking five of the first ten batters he faced. But the cold reality of Coors sunk in as he was charged with a career high 13 hits and 10 runs. Sheets who has gone the distance in his last three starts lasted just six innings before Justin Lehr relieved him in the seventh. The thin air didn't help Sheets' curveball and after relying on his fastball through the first three innings Colorado caught up to it.

Aaron Cook who nearly died with blood clots in his lungs earned his first win in a year. Cook allowed nine hits in six innings but only allowed two runs to even his record to 1-1 on the year.
