Hart a Hit in Debut

Brewers Defeat Reds in Series Finale

Dennis Jenders

Corey Hart arrived in Milwaukee on Sunday morning just in time for batting practice after he was recalled from AAA Nashville. He immediately filled in for the ailing Brady Clark with a three-run blast to give the Brewers an 8-3 win over the Reds.

After losing the first two games to Cincinnati the Brewers were in desperate need of a win. Their five game losing streak had started to push them out of playoff contention, and more importantly out of the win column.

Doug Davis had another strong outing striking out nine and retiring 10 batters in a row at one point. He failed to pick-up his tenth win in as many tries but contributed seven solid innings allowing four hits and two runs before the bullpen took over.

Ken Griffey Jr. hit a two-run shot in the fourth to tie the game and singled home a run in the eighth to tie the game again at 3 before the Brewers unleashed the offense.

The rally started when Rickie Weeks singled to right and Bill Hall reached on an error. Lyle Overbay, a day removed from his bobblehead debut, drove in Weeks. Carlos Lee fouled out but Geoff Jenkins kept the inning going scoring Hall before Wes Helms flied out.

And that's when Corey Hart found himself eyeing his first major league hit. Hart hit a big league shot over the left field fence - 401 feet to be exact. His first hit was a memorable one, giving the Brewers an 8-3 advantage over the Reds and more importantly a much needed win. Hart was welcomed to the big leagues with a standing ovation by the crowd after his towering home run.

The club made several transactions before the game. Relievers Matt Wise and Julio Santana were placed on the 15-day DL. In return the Brewers called up highly-touted prospect Jose Capellan and Kane Davis. Davis went on to receive the win in the game. Jeff Cirillo was also transferred to the 60-day DL.
