Cards Prospect Quiets Bats

Brewers Manage Three Hits in Loss

Dennis Jenders

The Brewers bats were quieted by rookie Anthony Reyes Tuesday night. Reyes was recalled from AAA Memphis to rest the staff and proved why he is the Cardinals top pitching prospect. A teammate of Mark Prior at the University of Southern California, Reyes has drawn similar comparisons and it's easy to see why. In 6 1/3 innings he allowed two hits, two runs and one walk while out dueling Doug Davis who contributed 5 solid innings before coming undone in the sixth giving the Cardinals two runs and a lead they would never relinquish.

Bill Hall hit a two-run homer in the second off of Reyes to give the Brewers a lead, but Reyes retired 15 of the next 16 batters before hitting the showers in the seventh. The Brewers only managed three hits as the offense couldn't find a way to support Davis' effort.

Manager Ned Yost was ejected in the second by home plate umpire Angel Hernandez for arguing a balk. "First base umpire (Chad Fairchild) didn't even flinch, (and he) had a better look at it," Yost said. "Chris Capuano and Doug Davis both have worked very hard on their moves. Their moves are every bit legal."

Yost would have to watch the rest of the game on TV, "We're out there trying to win ball games and St. Louis doesn't need any help." And Yost is right; the move appeared to be legal. The Brewers will send ace Ben Sheets to the mound tomorrow in hopes of avoiding a sweep. With a day off on Thursday the Crew will need to work on their offense as Cincinnati comes to town for a weekend series. If the Brewers can not beat the Cards tomorrow they will need to sweep the Reds to get back to .500, and stay in the Wild Card race.

Note: The Houston Astros lost tonight keeping the Crew within 5 games of the Wild Card.
