The heat must have gotten to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday afternoon as their pitchers melted down in the sixth inning of the Brewers 5-1 conquest to complete the season series. Chris Capuano pitched eight solid innings, to earn his 12th win, and seventh consecutive victory, as the Brewers defeated the Giants to earn a series split heading into a day off.
With temperatures reaching the mid-90's with oppressive humidity, Capuano thrived in the sultry conditions and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Marquis Grissom hit a broken-bat single into left field. For the day, Capuano allowed only two hits and a run on Edgardo Elfonzo's seventh inning double. Derrick Turnbow finished the last frame of a non-save situation, his first pitching assignment since July 25.
After Brady Clark struck out to start the sixth inning, Rickie Weeks took one for the team and reached first with Lyle Overbay and Carlos Lee following with walks against Giants starter Noah Lowry. Lowry's wildness continued as he nailed Geoff Jenkins on the left elbow, which caused concern for the team and the 38,000 fans. Jenkins shook it off, however, and remained in the game after the plunk and RBI, the first run of the game.
Bill Hall then hit a sharp liner to right, scoring Overbay and moving everyone up 90 feet. Hall's single would chase Lowry from the game. Kevin Correia entered the game with only one out and promptly walked Damian Miller to score another run. He then plunked J.J. Hardy in the middle of the back, plating the fourth run of the inning and more than enough for the Brewers to hang on for the victory.
Damian Miller added insurance in the eighth inning by blasting his fifth home run of the season to right center field. Brady Clark extended his hitting streak to a career-high 11 games. he did it the hard way, waiting until the eighth inning before getting a single to drop in left field.
With the win the Brewers won the homestand and had a winning record in July. The Brewers moved to 52-54 on the season and five and a half back in the Wild Card standings. The Chicago Cubs were defeated on Sunday, so the Brew Crew also moves within a game and a half of third place in the Central Division. The team now heads east starting at Shea Stadium, against the Mets, Tuesday night before making their final trip to Philadelphia this season.
