Since the day Rickie Weeks was promoted to the Major Leagues, the Brewers other rookie infielder has been sort of an afterthought. But Monday night was shortstop J.J. Hardys night to shine.
Hardy hammered a high fastball into the left field seats to start the Brewers half of the 7th inning that put them ahead 3-2, and it also gave ace Ben Sheets a much-deserved victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday.
Hardy then came up with a web gem on defense the next inning, robbing Alex Cintron of a leadoff hit by ranging behind Bill Hall in the hole at short and firing a strike to get Cintron by a step. With those two back-to-back plays, Hardy made everyone forget about Weeks for just a moment.
Lyle Overbay continued his hot hitting, adding an insurance homerun in the 8th inning to give the Brewers a solid 4-2 victory over the D-Backs. Closer Derrick Turnbow worked a 1-2-3 9th inning to earn his 21st save.
Sheets was staked to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Brady Clark opened the bottom half with a solo homerun. Overbay would later double, then score on a Geoff Jenkins single to give the Crew a quick 2-0 advantage.
Sheets gave up a homerun to D-Backs catcher Koyie Hill, and Arizona would later tie the game in the 4th on a sacrifice fly by Hill a few innings later. Sheets got into a jam in the top of the 7th, but Yost allowed his ace to work out of it, which Ben did by getting Shawn Green to ground out to first.
The same two teams go back at it on Tuesday, when Chris Capuano faces his old mates when he pitches against the D-Backs ace Branden Webb.
