Brewers rally to beat the Cards, 5-4

Eric Sacharski

If the Milwaukee Brewers do put together a solid second half of a season and finish above the .500 mark in 2005, we may be looking back at Tuesday nights 5-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals as the season’s turning point.

Using five scoreless innings from the bullpen, and a two-run double by Bill Hall in the 8th inning, the Brewers erased a 4-0 Cardinal lead and stole a win from Tony La Russa and the boys in red.

Starter Doug Davis was not very effective Tuesday, falling behind in the count early and often. But the Brewers used five pitchers from the bullpen to hold the Cards scoreless in the rest of the way, and the offense came alive just in time to give the Crew an inspiring come-from-behind victory.

Newly summoned lefty Dana Eveland led the Brewers bullpen herorics, pitching two more scoreless frames to run his total to 3 and two-thirds scoreless since his promotion. Jorge De La Rosa, Matt Wise, Julio Santana and Derrick Turnbow all pitched well, with Turnbow notching his 20th save with a 1-2-3 9th inning.

On offense, Brady Clark broke an 0-for-11 slump with a 3-for-4 night. Damian Miller and Russell Branyan also had two hits apiece, while Lyle Overbay hit a solo homerun in the 6th inning to bring the Brewers one run closer at 4-3, setting the stage for Hall in the 8th.

The Brewers will look to keep their momentum going tonight when ace Ben Sheets steps on the mound against the Cards lefty Mark Mulder. Sheets (5-6, 3.45) will have to pitch well, since Mulder (10-5, 4.13 on the season) is really hot right now going 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA in his last 4 starts.
