Brewers Lose to Nationals

Seven Walks Lead to 5-3 Loss

Dennis Jenders

Jose Guillen banged against the wall to catch the last out in the ninth as the Brewers gave each ball a ride deep towards the wall trying to overcome the 2 run deficit off closer Chad Cordero. The Brewers lost their first game of the second half 5-3.

Mike Stanton came on in the eighth to atone for the balk the previous night and made quick work of the Brewers which essentially closed the door on the Crew as Cordero has been nearly perfect this year.

Walks sealed the game for the Washington Nationals. Preston Wilson walked in the second before Vinny Castilla doubled to center in the second inning to score Wilson. Wilson showed his speed as he scored from first.

Brady Clark almost robbed him of the double as he went up against the wall to steal the hit from him but dropped the ball as he was coming down. In the bottom of the second Damian Miller singled to center to score Jenkins and J.J. Hardy doubled to deep center field to score Miller to give the Brewers the lead.

In the top of the fourth Castilla struck again after Wilson was walked doubling to center again. Wilson showed his impressive speed again as he hustled around the bags to score from first to tie the game.

Jose Vidro homered off Capuano in the sixth to give the Nationals a 3-2 lead. But home plate umpire Paul Schriber showed amazing patience with Jose Guillen earlier did not show the same amount of patience as he ejected Christian Guzman for arguing balls and strikes.

In the bottom of the sixth Geoff Jenkins singled with two outs and Bill Hall singled sending Jenkins to third. Damian Miller then tied the game as he went around for his third strike but catcher Gary Bennett allowed the ball to get under his glove allowing Jenkins to score and tie the game at 3-3. J.J. Hardy hit a hard liner to left field but it was caught to end the inning.

Ricky Bottallico relieved Chris Capuano in the seventh inning. Capuano at 111 pitches gave way to Bottallico and he quickly found himself in trouble allowing a single by Carlos Baerga and walking Ryan Church. The problems behind the plate continued as Miller let a ball get by him to advance the runners to second and third. Removing the possibility of a double play Jose Vidro grounded out to Lyle Overbay on what appeared to be a good double play ball. Jose Guillen who has not hit well against the Brewers made contact as he singled to deep center scoring Baerga and Church before Bottallico struck out Preston Wilson. But the damage was done as the Nationals had a 5-3 lead.

Rookie Dana Eveland came on in the eighth to relieve Bottallico. Eveland was promoted from Double A earlier and showed the sell out crowd his heat hitting 95 MPH on the radar gun while striking out Castilla and Wil Cordero to end the inning.
