Brewers take second game with balk in tenth inning

Dennis Jenders

The Brewers were given a 4-3 victory in the bottom of the tenth inning when first base umpire Paul Schrieber ruled that Mike Stanton balked as he moved towards the plate but threw at Rickie Weeks at first base. With Chris Magruder at third he was allowed to score finishing the game in the Brewers favor.

Manager Frank Robinson showed replays of the move in the club house and it seemed that the move was legal. With Brady Clark hitting a sacrifice Magruder advanced to third and Weeks was walked by Luis Ayala. With Lyle Overbay coming to the box Stanton replaced Ayala.

Earlier in the game the Brewers complained to the umpires that Livian Hernandez had gotten away with a balk when he successfully picked off Trent Durrington in the seventh. That may have set the stage for the call in the tenth.

Both Hernandez and Ben Sheets pitched well and Hernandez took a 3-2 lead into the eighth inning before Carlos Lee sent a slider into the seats to tie the game. Julio Santana got the winning by pitching a perfect tenth inning.
