April 17, 2005 - The St. Louis Cardinals completed a sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday afternoon. During the three-game stand the Brewers proved inept, as they did last season, at scoring runs with runners in scoring position.
After two disappointing outings on Friday and Saturday the Brewers looked to steal at least one game when they sent Victor Santos to the mound to face Jason Marquis. The Brewers had a promising start when Brady Clark hit a homerun off Marquis to start the game, and Junior Spivey almost did as well hitting a ball deep into centerfield.
As with the previous two games the Brewers' bats were not swinging well. With runners on base Carlos Lee and Geoff Jenkins could not come through. The bats will eventually start to make contact, but for a team that made acquisitions to bolster their offense it currently looks like a repeat of 2004. It is only two weeks into the season so we shouldn't worry yet.
But this was also an opportunity to steal a game or two from the struggling Cardinals. Scott Rolen has started slowly, but it looks like all they needed was a bit of Brewers pitching.
With a .189 team batting average with runners in scoring position the Brewers will look to rectify the problem with an upcoming week that features the Dodgers, Astros and Giants.
