NASHVILLE STILL ON TRACK
Last Week's Record: 3-2 Year-to-Date: 13-10
Positive Line of the Week: OF Brad Nelson 3-for-4, 2 R, 2B, 3B, 1 RBI
THE GOOD - Nelson put together this strong effort in the Sounds 5-0 victory over the Iowa Cubs on Tuesday. Also in that game, left hander Andy Pratt (ironically, a former Cub) stuck it to his former mates with 6 IP, 2 hits, 2 BB and 5 strikeouts. Kevin Orie (also a former Cub) continues to rake in AAA, but is blocked in his bid to make it to the Brewers by Branyon, Overbay and Cirillo.
Bad Line of the Week: RHP Jose Capellan 5 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 2BB, 4 K
THE BAD - Capellan continues to take one step forward, two steps back in Nashville. His line above came in a 10-3 loss to Omaha on Thursday. Capellan has now had one good start, two bad starts, and one start cancelled due to a blister on his finger.
STRONG WEEK FOR HUNTSVILLE
Last Week's Record: 5-1 YTD: 13-10
Positive Line of the Week: OF Nelson Cruz 3-for-6, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2B, 2 HR
THE GOOD - For the Stars, the tandom of Cruz and Cruz propelled them to a great week that included a five-game winning streak. Nelson Cruz put up those numbers in the Stars come-from-behind 14-13 victory over Tennesee Thursday. Cruz's second homer of the game was a walkoff that won it, and was his 5th of the year.
The other Cruz, Enrique Cruz, also continues to mash at the plate. He continues to hit well over .300, and even hit his first HR of the season in Friday's 6-2 win over Tennesee.
Outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. also had an impressive week, a week that saw his collect five straight two-hit games.
THE BAD - With a 5-1 week, I'd be crazy to even mention anyone in this section. Simply put, there were no bad perofrmances.
BUCKING FOR A PROMOTION
Last Week's Record: 2-4 YTD: 8-14
Positive Line of the Week: RHP Ty Taubenheim 7IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
THE GOOD - Taubenheim continues to impress on the bump. The righty ran his record to 4-0 with a skimpy 1.73 ERA with his gem of a game Wednesday in a 12-1 victory over Vero Beach. If he continues at this pace, he may find himself in a Huntsville Stars uniform soon.
Jeff Eure hit his 6th homerun of the season Wednesday, and Adam Heether went 3-for-4 (2B, 3B) with 4 RBIs in the big victory. Heether also collected a tw-hit game on Friday.
Bad Line of the Week: RHP Landon Stockman 0 IP, 6H, 6 ER, BB
THE BAD - Stockman had a one-run lead blow up in his face in the 9th inning of the Manatees 7-2 loss to Vero Beach Friday.
With the exception of Heether, and to an extent, Eure, the BC offense continues to just put-put along.
IT'S STILL EARLY
Last Week's Record: 1-5 YTD: 7-15
Postive Line of the Week: SS Alcides Escobar 2-for-4, 2B, 2 SB
THE GOOD - Escobar is starting to heat up at the plate, with the above game coming in Saturday's 5-3 loss to Palm Beach. He also went 3-for-5 in Sunday's 8-4 loss to Palm Beach. Escobar is about the only Power player hitting though, as they were held to only 4 hits in a 2-0 loss to Hickory on Wednesday.
Pitcher Yovani Gallardo looked good in his piggy-back "start" Wednesday. Gallardo went 2 innings and didn't allow a hit, but he did give up 3 walks while notching 3 strikeouts.
THE BAD - Everything! I didn't want to single out one specific "Bad" line because there were many. As the title of this segment states, thank goodness it's still early in the season. It can't stay this way all summer, can it?
